Yesterday came suddenly
The stitchings of Sonya Schönberger

Every day we take them in. News images, fragments, and flashes of reality: Dreadful. Horrible. Despairing. It is a phenomenon of our time. Events are created to satisfy a mass that has an insatiable appetite, yet whimsically turns its head and looks the other way in neglect. Each year the machine evolves, focuses, becomes more tuned to the mass, as sharp as a needle, accelerating towards a singularity of human as a consumer, information as a commodity.
Alone with a needle, in self-imposed isolation. Creating time to think. Making an ornament, a decoration. Something childlike and not quite a drawing. Something that requires meditation. This is an attempt to understand and to make things visible.
We are the spectators, listeners, and customers. We listen to news radio features, watch nightly news programs, read the headlines of daily newspapers; we constantly take in the images that falsely reflect what happens in our communities and on opposite sides of the world. The digital medium (digital photography and modern communication networks) makes things visible in an instant. A finger on the trigger is an image in the wire. How can we experience this speed and react to it, develop emotions, and be compassionate?
These questions can be unnerving. Using her own focused needle, artist Sonya Schönberger scrutinizes the press wire. Working for an international news agency, she has gained a unique perspective of this complex system. Reversing the process of an emerging press image by reflecting and stitching what she perceives, she attempts to open her eyes and to show a reflection of the daily food we swallow.
